EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) is a distinct identification number provided by customs authorities in the European Union (EU) to businesses and individuals involved in the import or export of goods to or from the EU. This number is essential for tracking and monitoring customs activities and ensuring adherence to trade regulations.

Who Needs an EORI Number?
Any business or individual participating in the following activities must obtain an EORI number:
Importing goods into the EU
Exporting goods from the EU
Transporting goods under customs procedures (e.g., transit, warehousing)
Acting as a customs representative
Importance of EORI
Mandatory for Customs Clearance – An EORI number is required for goods to clear customs, preventing delays or seizure.
Smooth Cross-Border Trade – Facilitates faster processing of shipments within the EU.
VAT & Duty Compliance – Necessary for VAT and customs duty declarations.
Used Across EU Countries – A single EORI number is valid in all EU member states.
Avoid Penalties – Non-compliance may lead to fines or rejection of shipments.
How to Get an EORI Number?
Businesses must register with their national customs authority (e.g., HMRC in the UK prior to Brexit, German customs for Germany).
The EORI number usually comprises the country code (e.g., GB for the UK, DE for Germany) followed by a unique identifier.
Post-Brexit Note
Following Brexit, UK businesses trading with the EU require:
A UK EORI (beginning with GB) for imports and exports from the UK.
An EU EORI (issued by an EU country) for moving goods into the EU.
Do you need assistance in determining if you require an EORI or in the application process?
